Burum Jazz

Date: Saturday, 21st May 2016
Time: 7:00 pm

Burum (meaning ‘yeast in Welsh) are on a tour of Wales celebrating the release of their third CD entitled ‘Llef’ (The Cry). Burum’s repertoire is drawn from Welsh traditional music, adapted and re-imagined for a modern jazz sextet. Burum’s music fuses a deep respect for the original folk melodies themselves with the flexibility and dynamics of jazz improvisation. Beautiful, melancholic melodies are performed alongside fiery solos and some deep grooves. Burum include Welsh folk pioneers ‘Fernhill’ regulars Tomos Williams (trumpet) and Ceri Rhys Matthews (wooden flute) as well as many of the best and busiest jazz musicians on the South Wales scene.

Over the past few years Burum have toured India (twice!) headlining the Goa and Kolkata Jazz Festivals, and have played Brecon Jazz and the Festival Interceltique in Lorient, Brittany. An evening of exciting, creative music, not to be missed!

…a Welsh “supergroup”. Jazz/folk fusions don’t always work but this succeeds brilliantly” – jazzmann.com
