Championed by BBC Radio 2′s Bob Harris, duelling fiddles, soaring brass crescendos, wind and vocal harmonies and earth shattering grooves conjure evocative images, blistering tunes and vivid songs with a charisma and elemental vitality, at the heart of which is a close group of friends with a clear vision and an unhindered ear for a good melody.

The Old Dance School began in 2006 as a gathering of friends in the garden of the old Betty Fox school of ballet in Birmingham, then legendary jam party venue, from where they take their name. From here, each would bring along a tune or a song for the group to experiment with culminating in their 2008 debut ‘Based On A True Story‘, produced by Joe Broughton.

Paper Aeroplanes is Sarah Howells and Richard Llewellyn. Their musical partnership began six years ago in small town West Wales and in 2009 they released their debut album “The Day we ran into the Sea”.

The album with its distinctive sound under Sarah’s beautiful vocals was described by the BBC’s Adam Walton as “brilliantly crafted and stoked from a bruised heart’s embers”, and BBC Radio Wales as “the finest radio album to come out of Wales since Rockferry”.

Since its release they have made the Radio 2 playlist and supported acts as varied as Ron Sexsmith, Ed Sheeran, Marina and the Diamonds and Chris Wood, as well as securing a live session with the legendary Bob Harris.

Having been compared to the likes of Gemma Hayes, Turin Brakes and Nerina Pallot, this year they released mini-album “We are Ghosts” to more critical acclaim and reviews such as “With songs this good, Paper Aeroplanes deserve a far wider audience” – BBC Music’s Robin Denselow; “Album of the Month” – Maverick Magazine and being picked for The Guardian’s “F&M playlist”.

Renaud Barret & Florent de la Tulaye Dem Republic of Congo/France 2010 85 mins PG

Documentary

Summer 2009. Five paraplegics and a young able-bodied teenager light up the stage in front of an entranced audience of 8000 people. “Benda Bilili” – in English “See Beyond”, is the name of this Kinshasa band which has acquired a global following.

Renaud Barret and Florent de la Tullaye have followed a band made of four homeless paraplegics and three “able” men, the Staff Benda Bilili, from the streets of Kinshasa, Congo, to music festivals in the cities of Europe. Some have guitars and wonderful voices, some have a wire on a tin or pieces of wood to beat. Another success story? Yes, but there is more to it. There are ups and downs, as life isn’t always easy in one of the poorest countries on earth, especially when you have just a sheet of cardboard on which to sleep.

Food from 6.30… 2 courses £10

Menu

Sweet potato and apple curry with rice and beans…chutney and accompaniments
